“Contrary to popular belief, my hubby and I don’t have a perfect marriage, but who does, right? There were/are several issues we needed/need assistance with; one of which was/is a nagging problem for quite some time.

We’ve had several sessions and every time our sessions ended I felt some breakthrough had occurred, no matter how small.

Our couples counselor was very perceptive and caring; he’s straightforward and honest, even if it may sting and I/we appreciate that about him. I appreciate that he allows us to talk to each other, but places boundaries (i.e. no fighting). He gives advice and tips on how to effectively communicate with your significant other (since the main issue most couples encounter is effective or ineffective communication).

Overall, our therapist just gets it. At times I may not convey the message as accurately or clearly as I may want, but he listens so well (guess that’s what he’s paid to do) that he understands and rephrases it and I just nod in agreement because he “got it.” He also knows how to approach us. I’m more sensitive and easily hurt and he handles me accordingly; my DH is different, and approaches/communicates with him accordingly.

The other thing I love about working with our therapist is that he’s goal oriented. He doesn’t want us to rely on him forever, but rather he wants us to achieve our marital goals. In order to do so he gives us a plan, he helps us set up boundaries, he guides us with directions.

I believe our relationship has improved since doing couples counseling. We have fulfilled one goal thus far and there is a couple more to aim towards.

Honestly, my hubby and I have a wonderful marriage, but for several nagging problems that are out of our control. Even if we had the perfect marriage, I would still see do relationship counseling because every marriage deserves a neutral, unbiased 3rd party to just give you a reality check, but also to give each spouse a safe place to communicate and unload feelings without judgment. I’m happy to say that no matter how our session may go on a given day, my husband and I leave the office and “hug it out” and move on with our evening feeling a little bit lighter emotionally.”
